Join the best Free Tour of Malaga, an ancient city where a multitude of cultures, civilizations and religions have coexisted. Discover its main monuments and stories with this Free tour that will make you fall in love with the capital of the Costa del Sol.
We will start from the Plaza de la Constitución, one of the busiest points in the city and which connects with the most important street in the city, Marqués de Larios. We will continue to the Plaza del Obispo, where we will find the Cathedral of Malaga, known by the people of Malaga as “La Manquita” because it only has one tower that stands out between its streets. Until 2012, it was the second tallest building in Andalusia, only surpassed by the tower of the Seville Cathedral known as La Giralda. A few meters away we will find the Palacio de Buenavista, which houses the Picasso Museum with more than 200 paintings by the promoter of contemporary art.
We will go down to the remains of the 1st century Roman theater next to the port and at the foot of the hill. The theater soon fell into disuse and was used for canning fish, hence we find spaces that allow us to view pools for the salting industry. The theater was discovered in 1951 and in 2010 an interpretation center was built that will make you better understand the importance of recreational spaces in the ancient Roman civilization. Nearby we will find the Alcazaba, an Arab fortress palace that was sheltered behind a wall. The reuse of Roman materials for its Islamic construction in 1063, and its later Christian use, have made it the perfect combination of cultures.
We finished the tour talking about the Gibralfaro Castle, another old Muslim fortress in the city that was founded with the intention of protecting the Alcazaba. Its name, Gibralfaro, is due to the lighthouse that originally topped its peak. From this point you will be able to access the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire city, including those of the port, where a square-plan building will attract our attention, this is the Pompidou Art Center, or the La Malagueta bullring. Enjoy this day with us.
